Interpretation of the Thirty-Seventh Rule of Love

Rule Number 37 — God is a meticulous clock maker. So precise is His order that everything on earth happens in its own time. Neither a minute late nor a minute early. And for everyone without exception, the clock works accurately. For each there is a time to love and a time to die.

Context - This rule appears when the killer sent to murder Shams arrives at Rumi’s house and comes face to face with Shams. Shams, inwardly aware of his approaching death, expresses this rule.

Interpretation within the Story - As the story moves toward final rules, the emphasis on surrender becomes stronger. Although this thread was present from the very beginning, when Shams initiated the journey, it now becomes unmistakably clear. Standing at the threshold of death, Shams speaks not with resistance but with total acceptance of the divine will. Surrender emerges as the essential foundation of any spiritual evolution. 

Deeper Interpretation Beyond the Story - Much of our suffering arises because we impose timelines on life. We try to plan, organize, and compartmentalize everything according to our expectations.

However, the Divine does not function according to these human-made timelines. It operates on its own rhythm, independent of our preferences. And ultimately, it is this divine timing that manifests in reality.

This rule reminds us that every event in life has its destined moment. It cannot occur even a minute earlier or later than it is meant to.

When our expectations fail to align with this deeper timing, stress and anxiety arise. Our timelines clash with the divine order, and we suffer as a result.

As Osho points out, if neither our birth nor our death is within our control, how can anything else truly be?

At its core, this rule points to the most fundamental requirement of the spiritual path; i.e. surrender. Without surrender to the divine, a seeker cannot progress even a single step.

It is an invitation to trust the timing of existence.
