The Meeting of Rumi and Shams

Then comes perhaps the most pivotal episode in the entire narrative—and undoubtedly the supreme turning point in the lives of Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi and Shams-e-Tabriz: their inaugural meeting. This singular encounter transformed not only their individual destinies but permanently altered the trajectory of Sufism for generations to come.

While Shams did not explicitly articulate any of his Rules of Love during this initial confrontation, omitting this extraordinary moment from a commentary on such a magnificent book would be nothing short of a literary crime.

Sufi tradition has meticulously preserved two classic accounts of this historic first meeting. While the outer details differ, both allegories convey the exact same profound spiritual truth.

Version 1: The Gauge of Cosmic Capacity : "Who is greater—Muhammad or Bayazid?"

It was the autumn of 1244 in the city of Konya.

Rumi was already an extensively celebrated scholar, an authoritative jurist, and a prestigious spiritual teacher. As he rode through the bustling streets near the marketplace and mosque, he was surrounded by an entourage of adoring students and disciples. Shams, conversely, was a completely obscure, wandering dervish from Tabriz who had spent decades searching for a soul capable of receiving the pure intensity of his inner spiritual fire.

Suddenly, Shams broke through the crowd, stepped forward, and seized the reins of Rumi’s horse.

Looking up at the great scholar, he posed a startling question: "Who is greater: the Prophet Muhammad or Bayazid Bastami?"

Startled by the apparent heresy of the query, Rumi replied sharply, "How can there be any comparison? The Prophet Muhammad is the apex of all prophets; he is the greatest of all."

Shams countered with a piercing follow-up: "If that is so, why did Muhammad humbly declare, 'I did not know You as You deserve to be known,' while Bayazid, in a state of divine ecstasy, proclaimed, 'Glory be to me! How great is my majesty'?"

For a few profound moments, Rumi fell silent. Then, a deeper understanding dawned upon him, and he answered: "Bayazid drank but a single cup of divine wine and felt entirely filled; his thirst was easily quenched. But the Prophet Muhammad’s capacity was an infinite ocean. The more he drank of the Divine, the more his thirst expanded, and the more vast and mysterious the Divine became to him."

Rumi’s response was conceptually brilliant, yet he immediately realized that Shams was not initiating a theological debate. The question was a mirror.

Shams was truly asking: "And what about you, great preacher? How large is your own cup? How much of the living Divine can your soul actually contain?"

Shams’ inquiry functioned precisely like a Zen koan—an existential device designed to violently push the mind beyond its habitual intellectual grooves. Until this very moment, Rumi had been a master of words, doctrines, and concepts. With a single question, Shams momentarily thrust him into a silent space entirely beyond language and thought. For the first time in his life, the great scholar glimpsed a dimension of absolute reality that existed far beyond philosophical explanations.

Version 2: The Purification of Sacred Texts : "What are these books?"

The second well-known version of their meeting focuses explicitly on Rumi’s immense academic scholarship and ego attached with it.

In this account, Rumi was sitting in a courtyard, surrounded by his students and stacked high with rare, voluminous manuscripts of theology and law.

Shams walked into the courtyard, pointed directly at the precious texts, and asked abruptly, "What are these books?"

Rumi dismissed the dusty traveler, replying, "This is knowledge which you cannot understand."

Without a single word, Shams seized the books and cast them directly into a nearby fountain.

Alarmed and horrified by the destruction of his invaluable library, Rumi rushed to retrieve them from the water. Yet, when the manuscripts were pulled out, they were completely dry. Not only were they unharmed, but the letters of every word had become strangely alive, vibrant, and glittering, as if centuries of accumulated dust had been miraculously wiped away.

Astonished and bewildered, Rumi asked, "How is this possible? What did you do?"

Shams smiled and mirrored Rumi's earlier dismissal back to him: "This is knowledge which you cannot understand."

Another variation of this legend says that Shams set the library ablaze, only to restore the manuscripts completely unharmed.

Decoding the Metaphor

How are we to interpret this beautiful metaphor of books remaining completely unspoiled by water or fire, emerging instead with glittering, living letters?

The logic is profound. Words written in a text are static; they possess no life of their own. Similarly, purely academic knowledge gained from books remains dead, intellectual data. However, when that theoretical knowledge is subjected to the elemental fire or water of a direct, divine experience, the true, hidden meaning of those words is instantly unlocked.

The letters become "alive" because the seeker has finally tasted the reality that the words were merely trying to describe.

These sacred books were originally written based on the raw, firsthand wisdom of enlightened sages. Therefore, until we undergo a similar experiential awakening, we can never truly comprehend the real depth behind their teachings.

Regardless of the elemental variation, the essential message remains identical. Shams used an unconventional, shocking device to introduce Rumi to a dimension of knowing that completely transcends accumulated information, concepts, and scholastic learning.

Why the Meeting Alters History?

Whether these encounters occurred exactly as stated in literal history is secondary to what they fundamentally symbolize. Within the Sufi lineage, this meeting is regarded as the definitive cosmic axis point of Rumi’s life.

Before his encounter with Shams, Rumi was celebrated merely as a brilliant academic, an elite jurist, and a respected orthodox preacher.

After this collision of souls, he progressively transformed into the ecstatic mystic and poet whose timeless verses on love, longing, and divine union continue to touch millions of hearts across the centuries.

As Sufi masters beautifully summarize it: Shams was the spark, and Rumi became the eternal flame.

Before Shams entered his sphere, Rumi’s days revolved around interpreting scripture, lecturing, and analyzing the ideas of past philosophers. Through a single encounter, he was introduced to the infinite realm of silence. For the first time in his life, a scholar who had spent his career examining the wisdom of others was compelled to turn inward and examine himself.

The question was no longer about historical prophets, external doctrines, or complex philosophies. The real question became: "What is my own personal capacity to receive the Divine?"

And that is the hallmark of a true Master. A real spiritual guide does not burden you with more beliefs, heavier theories, or convenient answers. A Master forcefully redirects your attention back toward your own source. He strips away your borrowed, secondhand knowledge and brings you face-to-face with your own raw being. Shams did not merely answer Rumi's questions; he fundamentally transformed the questioner.
